Want to sell on eBay UK or across Europe? Getting started is easier than you think. Whether you're a solo seller or running a full-fledged business, this step-by-step guide shows you exactly how to register an eBay business account and start selling with confidence.
⚠️ Please note that the information provided is accurate as of July 29, 2025. Don’t forget to check eBay’s official page for the latest updates.
Step 1: Choose the Right Account Type #
Before you start, decide whether you want to open a personal or business account.
- Private sellers typically use personal accounts.
- If you're running a registered company or operating as a sole trader, go with a business account. This is essential if you plan to sell in large volumes or want to display your company's info.
✅ Tip: To comply with UK and EU business regulations (especially VAT rules), registering as a business seller is strongly recommended.
Step 2: Go to the eBay Registration Page #
To begin, visit the eBay UK Register page and click “Register” in the top left-hand corner.
Step 3: Sign Up Using Your Preferred Method #
You can create an account using any of the following:

Extra Notes for UK & EU Sellers #
VAT Obligations #
UK sellers:
- VAT registration is mandatory if your turnover exceeds the UK VAT threshold (£90,000 as of 2024).
- eBay automatically collects and remits VAT on sales to UK and EU buyers when required (e.g., for orders under £135).
EU sellers:
- Must comply with EU OSS (One Stop Shop) if selling cross-border in the EU.
- eBay collects VAT on certain sales; however, you are still required to report VAT properly in your country.
- Provide a valid EU VAT number if you are registered; otherwise, eBay will charge VAT on seller fees.
ℹ️ Read more about your VAT obligations in the UK & EU on the eBay webpage.
Customs and Import Rules #
For UK-EU cross-border sales (post-Brexit):
- Sellers may need to add customs declarations and EORI numbers.
- Delivered Duty Paid (DDP) is recommended to avoid surprise charges to buyers.

You must comply with:
- UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking for the UK market.
- CE marking for the EU market.

eBay Business Policies #
UK/EU sellers must:
- Provide clear return policies (with a minimum of 14 days in most EU countries).
- Include shipping times and comply with consumer protection laws.
- Use local marketplaces (ebay.co.uk, ebay.de, etc.) for better visibility.
Payment Processing via eBay #
All sellers in the EU/UK are enrolled in eBay Managed Payments:
- Funds are deposited directly into your bank account (not via PayPal).
- eBay deducts fees and VAT before payout.
- You must verify your bank and identity details.
eBay Multiple Accounts Policy #
You can open more than one eBay account (e.g., for different product lines), but each must use a separate email address.
Don’t use multiple accounts to interact with the duplicate listing.
