Final Value Fees on eBay: How They Are Calculated

7 min read

Final value fees are one of the main parts of eBay selling costs. They apply to every completed sale and directly affect your margins.

This guide explains how final value fees are calculated and what impacts them. To understand the full cost structure, see our other guides on eBay fees, including insertion fees and Store subscriptions.

Final value fees in the US #

This fee is a percentage of the total sale amount plus a per-order fee: $0.30 for orders $10 or less and $0.40 for orders over $10.

Key exceptions to consider #

Final value fees on eBay are usually calculated on the total sale amount, including shipping. However, there are key exceptions that affect how shipping is treated.

Standard rule

  • Shipping is included in the final value fee calculation
  • The total sale amount includes item price, shipping, taxes, and other charges

Exceptions to shipping calculation:

  • If you offer both a cheaper domestic option and faster or international shipping, the fee is based on the cheapest domestic option available
  • If no cheaper domestic option is offered, the fee is based on the shipping method selected by the buyer
  • In selected countries (including parts of the Asia-Pacific), shipping is always calculated based on the buyer’s chosen service

eBay International Shipping

  • Only the cost of shipping to the U.S. hub is included in the final value fee calculation
  • Any international leg beyond the hub is excluded

Authenticity Guarantee (Sneakers)

  • No final value fee is charged on shipping when using the provided authentication shipping label
  • The buyer may still pay for shipping, but it is excluded from the fee calculation

Final value fees vary based on the Store subscription fees you pay – Starter, Basic, Premium, Anchor, or Enterprise.

Below are the most popular categories and their fees. Check the eBay official guide to see the whole list.

Final value fees in the United Kingdom #

Final value fees are the main cost of selling on eBay UK. You pay this fee only when your item sells.

Note: Final value fees in the UK are charged on the total sale amount, including item price, postage, and applicable taxes, plus a per-order fee. Additional charges may apply for Below Standard performance or very high ‘item not as described’ rates.

In addition, eBay charges a fixed per-order fee:

  • £0.30 for orders up to £10
  • £0.40 for orders over £10

The fee is automatically deducted from your payout.

What’s more to consider #

  • Category matters: Each product category has its own rate.
  • Tiered pricing: Some categories use lower percentages for higher order values.
  • Performance impact: Below Standard sellers may pay up to +6% extra.
  • Service metrics: High ‘item not as described’ rates can add +4%.
  • Multiple categories: If you list in two categories, the higher fee applies.

These factors can significantly change your final cost per order.

Final value fees in the European countries #

Final value fees across European eBay marketplaces follow the same calculation logic. However, the exact rates and thresholds are defined at the country level.

Each marketplace sets its own:

  • category percentages,
  • price thresholds for tiered fees,
  • and the fee structure for specific product groups.

As a result, the same product can have different selling costs depending on where it is listed.

What to consider #

  • No unified EU pricing. There is no standard fee across Europe. Each marketplace operates independently.
  • Country-level optimization. Fee differences can impact margin when you expand into multiple EU markets.
  • Localized category structures. Category definitions and fee tiers may vary slightly between marketplaces.
  • Cross-border impact. Selling into another EU market may introduce additional fees or different rate structures.

eBay final value fees by country #

Before you list in a new market or update your pricing, check the official eBay page for that country.

This is especially important if you sell across several regions. Small differences in category rates or price thresholds can affect your margins at scale.

Additional final value fees #

Extra charges are applied if a seller doesn’t meet eBay's performance standards, such as late shipment rates or policy violations, and are calculated as a percentage of the item's total sale price.

Buying or selling outside eBay #

If you exchange or reference contact details to transact outside eBay, you'll be charged a final value fee based on the highest sale value, even if the item doesn’t sell:

  • Auction listings: The fee is based on the higher of the auction start price, Buy It Now price, reserve price, or the price agreed upon with the buyer.
  • Fixed-price listings: The fee is based on the listed or agreed price, whichever is higher.

Low seller performance #

Additional fees apply if you fall below performance expectations:

  • Below Standard Accounts: An extra 6% final value fee on all sales if performance standards aren't met by the 20th of the month. Doesn’t apply to Above Standard or Top-rated sellers.
  • Very High 'Item Not as Described' Returns: If your return rate is rated Very High by the 20th, an additional 5% fee will be applied to sales in affected categories.

These additional fees are calculated as a percentage of the total sale value, and affected listings are indicated in your Account Summary. Only the 6% fee for below-standard performance is charged if both issues apply.

As you can see, final value fees can vary by category, price, and marketplace.

More fees to pay attention to #

Dispute fee #

eBay charges a $20.00 dispute fee (excluding sales tax) for each case where you are found responsible for a disputed amount, such as a chargeback.

International fee #

If your registered address is in the US and you use eBay International Shipping for eligible listings, no international fee is charged when the item sells.

If you don’t use eBay International Shipping, an international fee applies when:

  • the buyer’s delivery address is outside the US, or
  • the buyer’s registered address is outside the US (regardless of delivery address)

The fee is 1.65% of the total sale amount and is automatically deducted from your sales.

If your registered address is outside the US, refer to the fee page for your country or region for applicable international fees.

eBay fees go beyond standard listing and selling charges. To protect your margins, make sure you understand when extra fees apply and build your processes around them.
