Walmart Image Requirements Guide

3 min read

Want your products to stand out on Walmart Marketplace?

We’ve got you covered with this simple guide to Walmart’s image requirements. Don’t worry, they’re pretty straightforward.

In most cases, sellers don’t run into image issues at all. For a smooth listing, you'll need at least one main image (required) and three additional ones (recommended). If you’ve got that, you’re good to go!

Below, you’ll find Walmart’s standard image guidelines, from file types to dimensions and aspect ratios.

Walmart Image Requirements Guide

File & Format Requirements #

To ensure your product images display correctly across Walmart.com, follow these technical specifications.

  • Accepted formats: JPEG (.jpg), PNG, BMP (animated formats like GIFs are not supported);
  • Color profile: sRGB (IEC61966-2.1), 8-bit depth;
  • Walmart image size requirements: Maximum 5 MB;
  • Recommended size: 2200 × 2200 px (square);
  • Minimum size for zoom: 1500 × 1500 px;
  • Aspect ratio: Square (1:1); Fashion items require portrait (3:4, min 1500 × 2000 px);
  • Resolution: 300 PPI;
  • File name: Use the item’s 14-digit GTIN;
  • Swatch images: 50 × 50 px for color or pattern variants.

Main Image Guidelines (Primary Image) #

Your primary image is the first thing customers see; make it clean, accurate, and compliant.

  • Required: Mandatory at item creation (except for some Fashion categories using Workhorse);
  • Visibility: Needed for the product to appear in search and product pages on Walmart.com;
  • View: Front-facing (slightly angled right) on a solid white background (RGB 255,255,255);
  • Allowed alternative: Lifestyle/context shots for large or complex products;
  • Image quality: Professional lighting, sharp focus, centered, clean item (no dirt, smudges).

Additional Images (Secondary Images) #

Extra images help build customer trust and reduce returns; don’t rely on the main image alone.

  • Required: During setup (except for specific Fashion categories), check product-specific requirements;
  • Purpose: Shown after the main image; supports customer decisions;
  • Recommended number: Minimum three extra images;
  • Examples: Rear view, side view, lifestyle shots, zoomed-in details, packaging, variant views;
  • Control: You can choose their order on the product page.

Swatch Images #

Use swatches to showcase visual differences like color or design among your product variations.

  • Required if: Product has visible differences like color or print;
  • Size: 50 × 50 px;
  • Function: Displayed as clickable thumbnails beneath the variant selector.

Video Thumbnail & Rich Media #

Rich media, such as videos and 360° spins, can enhance the product experience; just follow the format rules.

  • Thumbnail: Cannot be manually set or changed;
  • Video formats: .mp4 only (no YouTube links); no redirects;
  • Accessibility: Include captions (.vtt format); use "[MUSIC PLAYING]" or "[NO SPEECH]" when needed.

Image URL & Hosting Rules #

The correct URL structure is essential to ensure your images display correctly on Walmart.com.

  • Valid format: URLs must end with image file types (.jpg, .png, etc.);
  • Disallowed: URLs with queries (e.g., ?width=100), redirects, or unsupported file types like .html;
  • The port of communication is not: 8080, 80, 443, or 8443;
  • Special characters: Must be URL-encoded (e.g., space = %20);
  • Hosting tips:
  • Supported: Amazon (some);
  • Imgur (direct links only);
  • Not supported: Dropbox.
  • When updating: Always provide a new unique image URL; otherwise, the image won’t refresh.

Prohibited Content #

Certain types of imagery are strictly forbidden to protect Walmart’s brand and customer experience.

  • Off-limits:
    • Nudity, offensive/violent content, suggestive material;
    • Unclean or damaged items (scratches, fingerprints);
    • Misleading photos or props;
    • Selfies or phone camera images;
    • Placeholder graphics unless provided by Walmart.

Placeholder Images #

Only use official placeholders if your product image isn’t ready; never upload your version.

Fashion Category Exceptions #

Fashion listings follow their own rules; portrait images and Workhorse uploads are a must.

  • Upload method: Use Workhorse for Baby Clothing, Footwear, Jewelry, Watches, etc.;
  • Aspect ratio: 3:4 (portrait mode); minimum 1500 × 2000 px;
  • Special guides:
    • Use Style Guides from Supplier Academy based on the category;
  • Quality standards:
    • Images must be clean, centered, with a white background (silo), no border;
    • Lifestyle or graphics images shouldn’t have white borders.

Bulk Upload & Item 360 Notes #

Uploading at scale? Walmart makes it easier to manage images in bulk through Item 360 or Supplier One.

  • Bulk method: Upload multiple images via folders (GTIN-labeled);
  • Image actions: Add, remove, reorder, crop, tag primary/secondary;
  • System notices: You’ll be alerted to issues like unsupported format or mismatched GTINs;
  • Track uploads: Use the activity tracker in Item 360 or Supplier One.
