How M2E Handles Amazon Replacement Orders in Shopify

1 min read

When a customer receives a damaged or incorrect item, they can request a replacement through Amazon instead of a refund. If the request is approved, you may be required to receive the returned item and ship out a new one.

The replacement is issued at no extra cost to the buyer, as it’s not a new purchase, but rather a continuation of the original transaction. That’s why the new order total is usually $0, and the delivery terms match those of the initial order.

M2E Multichannel Connect fully supports Amazon replacement orders and imports them into your Shopify store. Even though Shopify doesn’t allow orders with a zero total by default, M2E applies a built-in workaround to sync these orders.

M2E’s workflow for replacements #

The customer places an order on Amazon and receives the item. If there’s a problem, like the item is damaged, missing, or incorrect, the customer contacts Amazon.

Amazon reviews the issue and, if approved, issues a replacement order. A new order ID is created, and M2E imports the replacement order to Shopify with the following details:

  • The original order ID is included in the Notes section of the replacement order. This way, you can trace the full order history and respond to buyer inquiries.
  • A 100% discount is applied automatically, so the order total becomes $0. This allows the Amazon order to be created in Shopify.

  • A "Replacement" tag is added to all such orders, so you can instantly identify them in your order list.

Key advantages for sellers #

If you're using M2E Multichannel Connect to manage your Amazon sales in Shopify, this workaround helps you:

  • Recognize when an Amazon order is a replacement for a faulty item
  • Communicate clearly with buyers by referencing the original order
  • Keep your order workflow centralized in your Shopify admin

The solution by M2E is especially useful for electronics, home goods, fashion, and other categories where replacements are more frequent due to size, defects, or delivery issues.
