Using Shopify metafields in M2E Multichannel Connect

2 min read

What are Shopify metafields? #

Shopify metafields allow you to add extra product information that may not fit into the standard fields. They’re a versatile tool for adding custom product attributes, such as dimensions, special features, or URLs. In Shopify’s admin, you can set these up by going to Settings > Custom data > Metafields.

How M2E Multichannel Connect uses metafields #

M2E Multichannel Connect lets you use metafields directly from your Shopify store to set up your existing or new listings on marketplaces like eBay or Amazon.

For example, you can select a metafield as the source for a product’s price, quantity, eBay Category specifics, or Amazon Product Type attributes. Once you update the metafields in your Shopify store, the app will reflect these changes in your listings on the marketplace.

Instead of manually entering product details for each marketplace listing, you can use an existing Shopify metafield as the source. The app automatically pulls the relevant attribute for your items, which simplifies and speeds up product data management across marketplaces.

Supported metafield types #

M2E Multichannel Connect currently supports the following types of Shopify metafields:

  1. Basic Attribute Types:
    • Boolean: True/false values (e.g., “is_limited_edition”).
    • Color: Specific color codes or descriptions.
    • Date and DateTime: Useful for time-sensitive products (e.g., expiry dates).
    • Decimal Number and Integer Number: Quantities, prices, or weights.
    • Single-line Text and Multi-line Text: Short and long product descriptions.
    • URL: Links for additional product resources.
  2. Measurement-Specific Types:
    • Weight, Dimension, and Volume: For size-based product details.
    • Money: Pricing information, especially useful when setting prices across different currencies.

Use Cases #

Some Shopify metafields are only applicable in certain cases within M2E Multichannel Connect. For instance, fields like URL may not apply for price-based attributes. Here’s a quick overview of how some of these types apply in specific cases:

  • Quantity and Price: Only numerical types like Decimal Number, Integer Number, and Money are available for selection.
  • Product Descriptions: Multi-line or single-line text metafields provide flexibility for your product descriptions.
  • Marketplace Attributes: Custom metafields for color, weight, volume, etc., can help you fill in the required and recommended product attributes, so you don’t need to input the data manually.
